Co-operatives, a Model for Community Based Health

Dec 4 2008 - 16:00
Dec 4 2008 - 17:00

Dr. Mark Sherman, Victoria Community Health Co-operative

"The Victoria Community Health Co-operative began as everything does—as a dream. 3 years ago, 3 friends met in a clinic waiting room one evening to brainstorm a vision of a Community Integrative Health Center that addressed health in its broadest contexts—physical, emotional, spiritual, social, environmental." Today the co-op has over 70 members and a community of 246 people on their e-mail list. The members are working with the community towards expanding health care services and programs such as a virtual health resource center, integrative health services, and working towards establishing a community health centre.

Time: December 4th, 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Location: David Strong Building C130

Dr. Mark Sherman is a Family Medicine Physician working in Victoria at
a community clinic for the past 5 years. With a background in
International Health and a specialty in Integrative Medicine, Dr.
Sherman has a unique perspective on the importance of community
ownership and participation in health and wellness. He is the
co-founder of the Victoria Community Health Co-operative, and a strong
proponent of health co-ops as a model for change in our health care
system, provincially and nationally. He is also a new (and very proud)
father!
