Land. Soil. Earth. Home. When one thinks of Land, what visions are conjured? What smells, tastes, dreams are brought into being? How do we manifest those dreams and what nightmares are born when we wage war over them? In the new global economy, the struggle for rights to Land - to earth, to soil, to home - is increasingly fraught, and increasingly central to the survival of humanities' infinite diversity. As more multinational powerhouses enter the game of buying, selling, and exploiting land, more and more tools are needed in the fight for self-determination, for reclamation, for communal ownership.
At the 2008 NASCO Institute - Part One of our two year exploration of land - we will examine the role cooperatives can play in supporting and working in struggles for land rights; the connections between land use, human rights, economic development, and the cooperative movement; and the strategic position these topics hold in the larger struggle against globalization and economic colonialism. Through workshops, discussions, film screenings, panels, and caucuses, we will share the knowledge and methods to create a just land system, and build the foundations on which to manifest this vision in our individual lives and in the lives of our communities.
