Biography

Sol Kinnis, B.A., DipRNS

Community Outreach Co-ordinator
With BCICS: May 2001 - Jun 2009

Sol offered the institute her passion for co-operatives as a tool for social and economic justice and through her role as community outreach and resource co-ordinator, helped researchers, co-operators and community members access our tools and publications and directed them to other available resources on co-operatives. Sol's major contributions to the Institute were: co-ordinating the BCICS Speaker's Series; co-organizing the Ethical Purchasing Forum (2007), the Remaking the Economy Forum (2009) and the 6th Annual Building Co-operative Futures Conference (2008) with the BC Co-operative Association; cataloguing and maintaining the Saxena Library for Co-operative Studies; producing the 2008 editions of the Anthill Newsletter, editing Co-operatives by Design: Building Blocks for Co-op Development, a guidebook for developing co-operatives; and researching the current status of the co-operative housing movement.

Outside of the BCICS, Sol is a founding member of a new non-profit housing development co-operative in Victoria -the Roofs and Roots Housing Co-operative, which is the first new non-profit housing co-op in Victoria in over 10 years. Sol is also involved as a member of the newly forming South Islands Regional Co-op Council and is a worker-member of an urban farmer's collective, City Harvest.

Sol is the proud member of several co-operatives in Victoria and is now able to meet her families' financial, housing, transportation and (some) produce needs -and its outdoor adventure desires -through the co-op model.
