Co-operation and sustainability are two philosophies which work much better together than alone. They complement each other in numerous ways, allowing decisions to be made by a diverse group with many ideas, as well as always driven by the overarching theme of maintaining the social, economic, and environmental livelihoods enjoyed today for future generations. O.U.R. Ecovillage is a prosperous intentional community on Vancouver Island, and an example of the intertwining of those two philosophies with an emphasis on the environmental aspect of sustainability. Co-operation and environmental protection have been mainstays of many intentional communities, in the past and today. This paper will explore O.U.R. Ecovillage from the perspective that sustaining the environment and co-operation are the most important things that can be done in a community.
